Local Teens Collect New Blankets and Socks

Students from Gig Harbor, Henderson Bay and Peninsula High schools teamed up for a blanket and sock drive Dec. 5 and 6 for disadvantaged families. More than 100 new blankets and dozens of socks were collected.

The students worked with local businesses to promote the drive-through event for Communities In Schools of Peninsula. Donations were collected at Dolly Mama Boutique in Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula Fire Station at Key Center. Fondi’s Pizzeria and The Gourmet Burger Shop in Gig Harbor sponsored donation boxes in their establishments.

PHS freshman Maria Rivera-Alvarez coordinated the blanket drive for the school Interact Club, an offshoot of Rotary Club International. “I felt so proud and satisfied with all the work that was being done and how heartwarming it was to see everyone give back to their community. It is exactly what we needed during these unpredictable times, and I could not be more honored to have been a part of this amazing project to help others.”
