Peninsula High School wrestlers Mira Sonnen (145 lbs.) and Bailey Parker (155 lbs.) each repeated as district champions, leading the Seahawks girls wrestling team to the District 3 Championship at Silas High School Feb. 15.
Justus Johnson (120 lbs.), Paige Powers (125 lbs.), Ava Miranda (135 lbs.) and Lindsey Shipp (170 lbs.) also claimed individual titles in their respective weight classes, delivering a dominant performance that solidified their strong presence at the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome Feb. 20 and 21. Results were not available at press time and can be found on www.keypennews.org.
Overall, the girls scored 291.5 points, nearly double second-place finisher Lincoln High, and qualified 15 wrestlers for the Mat Classic. With almost the entire team advancing to state, the Seahawks are all but assured a Top 5 finish — if not a repeat of their 2024 3A state championship win.
Miranda highlighted her impressive showing with three pins, including a champi- onship pinfall over North Thurston’s Ganeja Jones in 2:49. Sonnen, with a 29-2 record heading into the Mat Classic and the reigning 140 lbs. state champion, earned her district title with a commanding 7-0 decision over Maya Stevens (33-4) of Lakes. Parker (17-2), who won the 145 lbs. state championship last year immediately following Sonnen’s victory, earned her district title with two pins.
Parker has lost just three matches in the past two years.
Georgina Johnson (100 lbs.) and Brianna Sanderson (115 lbs.) finished as district runners-up after losing their championship bouts.
The Seahawk boys took 10th place at their respective district tournament and will send six wrestlers to the Mat Classic. Nehemiah Grandorff returns to the state tournament after a tough 4-2 loss in the 144 lbs. championship match to Patrick Halpin of Capital. Grandorff, who took third at districts and seventh at state last year, is the only Seahawks boys wrestler with state experience. Bryce Tillman, who got a third-place district finish, was a state alternate last year.
