After taking a small 22-19 lead into halftime, the Gig Harbor girls basketball team dominated the second half, outscoring the Peninsula Seahawks 28-11 to secure a 50-30 win in the first round of the Puget Sound League Tournament Feb. 4.
Senior Grace Richardson scored half of her team’s points, finishing the night with 15 to go with nine rebounds.
The Seahawks defeated the Tides, 47-36, in their regular-season meeting Jan. 15, but this time Gig Harbor (13-8) earned its way to the semifinals, where it will face top-seeded North Thurston High School (20-1) Feb. 6.
Despite the loss, Peninsula (12-8) isn’t done yet. The Seahawks will host Silas High School (9-13) the same night, and win or lose will play again on Saturday. Silas, which lost 76 to 34 to North Thurston on Tuesday, fell to Peninsula by just one point, 28-27, in each team’s season opener Dec. 3.
The Seahawks need to win just one of the two games to qualify for the District 3/4 tournament that starts next week. The Puget Sound League will qualify seven of its eight conference tournament teams for districts. If Peninsula loses both, their season will be done.
