Peninsula High School athletes closed out the spring season with record-breaking performances, repeat championships, and a glimpse of the future, as both veterans and underclassmen delivered on the big stage. From a new school relay record in track, back-to-back baseball district titles, and rising softball stars returning the program to state, the Seahawks made their mark across multiple sports.
Track and Field: 4x400-Meter Team Breaks School Record
Junior Suri Sardinia capped an impressive season with two top-10 finishes at the 2025 WIAA State Track and Field Championships. After winning both the Puget Sound League discus and shot put titles and placing second in each event at districts, Sardinia went on to finish fourth in discus (126 feet, 2 inches) and 10th in shot put (35 feet) — just over 4 feet shy of her school record set earlier in the season.
Junior Emma Young tied for third place in the high jump at 5 feet, 1 inch — improving on her fourth-place finish at the 2024 state meet. As a freshman in 2023, she earned second place with a personal best of 5 feet, 2 inches.
In the relays, the 4x100-meter team of Trever Bingham, Jack Robbins, Tristen Rodriguez, and Jake Johnson placed seventh with a time of 43.04 seconds.
During the 4x400 prelims, Robbins, Rodriguez, Johnson, and Joshua Cashion broke an 8-year-old school record with a time of 3:25.18 — beating the previous mark of 3:26.10. Despite the historic effort, the team narrowly missed qualifying for the finals.
As a team, Peninsula’s girls placed 24th overall, while the boys finished 46th at the state meet.
Softball Returns to State Tournament
The Peninsula girls softball team (18-10, 11-5 in the Puget Sound League) won three of the four District 3/4 tournament games to take fifth place and the No. 13 seed at the 3A state tournament. Peninsula won their opening round game at state before falling to No. 4 Sedro-Woolley, 9-2. Sedro-Woolley went on to take third in the state tournament.
Sophomore Vivien Sweet (First Team, PSL Nisqually Division) and freshmen Izzy Michaels and Paige Jones (Second Team) made it clear that Seahawks softball is in good hands, even with the graduation of senior Ava Miranda (First Team) and seniors Mira Sonnen and Gabby Gelli (both Honorable Mention). Miranda and Sonnen were major contributors to Peninsula’s 2023 state championship run.
Baurichter Adds Doubles Title to Tennis Résumé
One year after winning the Puget Sound League singles championship, Peninsula junior McKenna Baurichter returned to the top, this time as a doubles player. Baurichter teamed up with senior Margaux Mayer to win the PSL doubles title this spring.
The pair narrowly missed a trip to the state tournament, falling in the fifth-place match at the 3A bi-district meet to Lexi Frost and Addie Simonsmeier of Mountain View, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Mayer also finished fifth at the league tournament last year with her previous partner, Lindsay Kilcup. This season, Baurichter and Mayer were recognized with First Team all-conference honors for their standout performance.
Baseball Wins Second Straight District Championship, Goes to State
For the second year in a row, the Peninsula baseball team took down the top-ranked 3A team on its way to claiming back-to-back District 3/4 championships.
The Seahawks (16-8 overall, 12-4 in the Puget Sound League) upset No. 1-ranked Gig Harbor, 4-2, to secure their second straight district title. The win earned Peninsula the No. 5 seed and a first-round bye in the 3A state tournament.
Their postseason run ended in the second round with a narrow 1-0 loss to Eastside Catholic.
Sophomores Kainoa Coit and Thomas Marzano, along with senior Jonathan Vergara-Dykes, were named to the PSL Nisqually Division First Team. Sophomore Pete Browand earned Second Team honors, and senior Isaac Schultz-Tait received an honorable mention.
More Recognition for Seahawks
Several other Seahawks also earned all-league recognition this spring. In boys soccer, senior Daniel Holt and junior Phillip Kim were named to the First Team, with Ramse Vitale earning Second Team and Jonas Koller receiving honorable mention. On the golf course, sophomore Leiston Stoddard made the First Team in boys golf, while junior Scott Raymond earned Second Team. Ella Bouchard, a sophomore, was named to the Second Team for girls golf.
In boys lacrosse, seniors Nate Gendreau, Thomas Gillam, and Davis Floor all earned First or Second Team honors. The girls water polo team placed Reis Every, Jewel Gullum, and Kate Henkel on the First Team, with Taylor Bell and Jenna Lohrey on the Second Team, and Alyx Morris receiving honorable mention. Coach Hannah Walker was named District 2 Coach of the Year for her leadership.
Coates Commits to Wisconsin-Green Bay
Junior soccer star Ella Coates announced in April that she plans to play Division I soccer at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay starting in 2026.
“They have an amazing coaching staff, and there’s an opportunity to build something special within the program,” Coates said. “From the beginning, it felt like the right fit — on and off the field.”
Coates helped lead the Seahawks to a 14-4-1 record, reaching both the conference and district championship games, falling to Gig Harbor in each. Peninsula also earned its fourth consecutive state tournament appearance. Coates finished her junior season with 11 goals and nine assists and is a two-time all-conference and all-state selection.
