Against the Fire Levy

Posted

I have lived on the Key Peninsula since 1974 and never voted against a fire or EMS levy until this year. I am opposed to supporting an organization that seems to spend money needlessly. I almost voted against the last levy and maybe I should have, as most of that money was squandered in areas that have nothing to do with improving our service. The board of fire commissioners needs to present a plan that does not include grandiose pipedreams about property, renovations or equipment. It also needs to figure out a way to rectify its past mistakes.

Our fire and EMS costs used to equate with road spending on our tax bills, but in 2015 the fire department cost began to creep up. In 2019 it started ballooning and by 2024 it had almost doubled. Have our fire services become that much more expensive than the cost of our roads in just five years?

I believe this indicates some unbalanced spending that must be seriously reviewed. When these hurdles have been cleared I will gladly resume voting for KPFD levies.
