Latest Tracker Updates: Westbound Rower Around the World

Solo circumnavigator Erden Eruç of Wauna, 60, made landfall at Legazpi City in the Philippines March 24, becoming the first person to row from the U.S. to Asia after launching in California June 22, and making brief stops in Hawaii and Guam, on the first leg of his second human-powered trip around the globe.

Eruç was escorted to anchorage by a fleet of local sailors and kayakers, one of whom intercepted him underway to present the pennant of the Philippines to fly on arrival, a longstanding nautical tradition. 

Eruç was headed to Hong Kong but adverse weather affected his route and significantly slowed his progress. After stopping to make repairs in Hawaii he was forced south to Guam and planned to head from there to Singapore, he wrote in his blog.

He now plans to store his boat in the Philippines until next January or February, and resume his journey when conditions to row further west will be more favorable.

Eruç rowed from California to Australia for a total of 312 consecutive days from Juy 10, 2007 to May 17, 2008, setting the current world record for a non-stop unassisted ocean row. It was the first leg of his first solo human-powered circumnavigation, completed in 2012, crossing the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans, when he became the first person to row all three.
