On a sun-swept Saturday in mid September well-wishers gathered at Home Park to celebrate its first birthday -- complete to a birthday cake, but no candles.
Key Peninsula Metro Park Board members led by their president Elmer Anderson were on hand, as were park employees led by KPMP’s executive director Scott Gallacher.
Members of the KP Lions Club were there including president George Robison who spearheaded and supervised construction of the park’s picnic shelter which bears the Lions club plaque.
A high point of the celebration had KP Sportsmen’s Club representatives Cathy Marino and vice president Larry Hazen cut the ribbon on the club’s gift of a non-destructible park bench.
During the day many youngsters enjoyed the park’s swings, “fire engine,” slides and other playground equipment and anyone who wanted savored hotdogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings, fresh fruit, and cold drinks.
Many parents and children in attendance spoke glowingly of the park and told how they and their youngsters frequently visit it. One person who drives past it almost daily said, “Unless it’s a real downpour or dark of night, there are always supervised kids enjoying the place.”
