Howard Thomas Smith

Howard Thomas Smith, affectionately known as “Smitty” and “Pa,” peacefully passed away May 31, 2024, in Tacoma surrounded by his loving family. He was 73 years old.

He will be remembered as a man of integrity, kindness and unwavering devotion to family. His legacy of service, outdoor adventures, and love for life will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.

Born August 28, 1950, in Atlanta, Georgia, Howard was the cherished son of Bobbie Nell (Holcombe) and Richard Mack Smith. His life was marked by honorable service in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, where he exemplified dedication, courage and selflessness.

Howard found profound joy in his 38-year marriage to his beloved wife Jonda Smith, creating a home filled with love, laughter and creativity. He was a devoted father to his daughters Carmella Kowell, Cecilia Smith, Darlene Thomas (PID), Ronda Remaley-Maxham, and Christina Austin; sons Marc Grubb (Sarah), Charles Remaley, Mark Remaley-Smith (Sasha) and Eric Thomas-Smith. Howard was a pillar of strength and guidance to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.

Beyond his military career, Howard had a true love of the outdoors, finding solace in hunting, fishing and clamming. These pursuits not only brought him joy but forged lasting bonds with family and friends.

Howard had a deep passion for art encompassing painting, drawing and sculpting throughout his life. His artistic endeavors were a testament to his creativity and appreciation for beauty in all forms. His love for art added richness to his experiences and brought joy to those around him.

A celebration of Howard’s life will be held August 28 at 10 AM at the Key Peninsula Lutheran Church, McColley Hall, 4213 Lackey Road NW in Lakebay. Following the celebration, a graveside service with full military honors will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Tahoma National Cemetery in Tacoma.
