LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Local's Update: Letter from Ukraine

Posted
I wrote about my fifth trip to Ukraine back in May of this year. I wrote about my first at my safe house in Kharkiv. Since then more tragedy has found Ukraine by the relentless missile, rocket and bomb attacks by the Russians.

Five days after my arrival the Russians launched a missile attack targeting a large retail store in the north of the city meant to kill as many civilians as possible. The name of the store is Epicentr K. Not much different from the Home Depot and Lowes stores in America. It was a nice spring day with people buying things for their gardening and home projects.

A UMPB D-30-SN aerial bomb was launched from near the Russian city Belgorod, about 58 miles away. It hit the roof of the store at 4 p.m., killing 19 and wounding 54, including children and the elderly. This is the third Epicentr K store to be targeted in Ukraine and the deadliest attack on one so far.

Another missile struck Kharkiv June 22, this time at an intersection in front of the main bus terminal. People were in their vehicles stopped at a traffic light. Six civilians were killed and many more wounded. Shrapnel flew as far as half a mile away.

July 9 the Russians out did their previous attacks by targeting the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv, killing 41 civilians that day. The Antheus dog training center north of Kyiv was also targeted. Military and police dogs reside there. It is a beautiful facility located on the West Bank of the Dnieper River. This is a place I frequent bringing supplies for the dogs and their people. Two humans and several dogs were victims. This was the second time it was struck.

What will the Russians do next? Only Putin knows. As frightening as it is, this is why I’m here. Russia has become a terrorist state waging war on ordinary people. People need food as well as their pets. People need evacuation as well as their pets. People are the victims as well as their pets.

Many thanks to the generous people in our community who help fund these missions of mine. Key Peninsula has been a light for the people of Ukraine and for me.
