Peninsula Youth Wrestling was established eight years ago with one team operating out of Key Peninsula Middle School.
The 2009-2010 season was the largest to date with 3 squads; The Cougars, The Grizzlies, and The Bulldogs. Last year PYW had over 100 young athletes in the organization, which operates as an AAU affiliate.
Wrestling is an individual sport where each child practices with the team and learns the value of teamwork, character, and sportsmanship, said head coach Matt Matteson.
The style of wrestling taught is folkstyle/collegiate. Wrestlers compete in weight classes with considerations of age and skill level. There are lots of opportunities for live matches. PYW will have dual meets with other clubs in the area that include but are not limited to South Kitsap wrestling teams, Bremerton, North Mason, Kingston and HYW, all of which make up the Eric White League.
