The Peninsula girls basketball team lost to the Timberline Blazers, 61-50, in the fifth-place consolation game of the district 3/4 3A Girls Basketball Tournament, making them 13-9 overall for the season.

Even with the loss, the Seahawks still have one more chance to make the state tournament when they face the Kelso Hilanders Sat., Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. at Mt. Tahoma High School.

Seahawks Coach Hannah Lekson said her team was competitive throughout the game, but the Blazers (now 20-3) went on a run in the third quarter her team couldn’t overcome.

“We were so close in the first half. I’m proud of them fighting and they didn’t give up,” Lekson said.

Kaylia Heidelberg (20 points) and Grace Richardson (15 points) combined to score 45 of the Seahawks 50 points on the night. This is the third time these two conference foes have met this season: all three Blazers victories. Timberline took second place in the South Sound Conference right ahead of Peninsula.

Kelso (13-10) beat Kent Lake, 54-34 in the first round of the district tournament and Auburn Mountainview in the second round, 44-37. The Hilanders lost to Lincoln on Friday, 63-41, to set-up the match-up with the Seahawks. The winner of the game will claim eighth place in the district and earn a spot in the state tournament starting next week. The loser will call it a season.
