Seven Peninsula High School student-athletes announced their intentions to play college sports starting next fall. While three of them were honored earlier this year, the school recognized Anne Shipp, Malia Coit, and Kaylia Heidelberg at a ceremony in the school library on May 8. Kylie Michalke signed with Washington State later in the month.
Anne Shipp, Track & Field/High Jump (Eastern Washington)
Fresh off winning the South Sound Conference championship in the triple jump last month with a personal record of 35 feet 1 inch, Anne Shipp is joining the Eastern Washington Eagles track & field team, but as a high jumper.
“Anne is an amazing addition to the ‘Flight Crew,’” said Jonina Brinson, who coaches the jumpers for Eastern Washington. “She’s full of raw talent and ready to work. She will definitely be someone to look out for in the 2024-25 season.”
Shipp regularly placed in the top five in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump events at meets this year and placed fifth at the SSC, district, and state meets last year in high jump. Her high jump personal best of 5 feet is tied for 10th in the school record charts.
“Not only is Anne coachable, talented, and competitive, but she’s also a natural leader whose inspiration has been crucial to developing a talented, young core of jumpers at PHS,” said Seahawks Assistant Coach Jack Harry.
Addi Sebren, Women’s Soccer (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley)
Addi Sebren announced in February she is heading 2,200 miles away to Edinburg, Texas, near the Mexico border to play soccer this fall for a Vaqueros team that finished 5-9-1 last season.
“One of the main reasons I chose UTRGV is because of the tremendous support with academics and athletics the university provides,” Sebren said in a statement released by the university in April.
Sebren was a four-year starter for the Seahawks soccer team and was first-team All-SSC this year. She spent six years playing club soccer with Washington Premier Football Club.
“During the recruiting process, the whole coaching staff really enjoyed getting to know Addi and we were very impressed with her maturity,” said UTRGV Head Coach Mark Foster, who mentioned Sebren can play multiple defensive positions. “Her versatility combined with her athleticism will give her a great chance to be a success at the Division I level.”
Jack Carlock, Football (Pacific Lutheran)
Jack Carlock won’t be going too far to continue his football career. The 6 foot 4, 275-pound offensive lineman started 2024 by announcing he will be a Lute with Pacific Lutheran.
“Jack is an intelligent football player who loves to compete,” longtime Seahawks football coach Ross Filkins said. “He has the frame to build on and succeed at the next level.”
Carlock also got offers from schools like Linfield University (Oregon) and Whitworth University in Spokane.
Kylie Michalke, Women’s Wrestling (Washington State)
Kylie Michalke was the latest signee of the senior class, inking to wrestle with Washington State University in late May. The 125-pound Michalke was a contributor to the Seahawks winning the school’s first girls wrestling state championship in February. She didn’t place at the state tournament but finished fourth in her weight class at the regional tournament. Individually she was 27-15 this last season.
Malia Coit, Softball (Adams State)
Though the 2024 season for the Seahawks softball team wasn’t as successful as the 2023 3A state championship team, Malia Coit continued to excel on the field through her senior year. She’ll carry that on next season in Alamosa, Colorado, with the Adams State Grizzlies.
Coit split her time between playing second base and outfield as a four-year starter for the Seahawks. She earned second-team All-SSC honors her freshman year and moved up to first-team All-SSC her last three years. Coit was named to the All-State honorable mention team after a memorable state playoff run in 2023 where she finished with a .520 average and hit eight home runs over an eight-game span, culminating in Peninsula’s 4-1 win over Snohomish for the state title. She batted .481 over her high school career.
“Malia’s academic commitment and drive to be a student-athlete here at Adams State will help change the future for the Grizzlies,” said Adams State Coach Dane Craig, whose team just finished a 5-48 season. “We knew the fit would be a good one if she decided she wanted to be a Grizzly.”
Kaylia Heidelberg, Women’s Basketball (Pacific)
Seahawks girls basketball fans will get more chances to see Kaylia Heidelberg play. The 5 foot 7 guard is taking her sharpshooting skills to Forest Grove, Oregon, to join the Pacific Boxers, a team that plays in the same conference as Pacific Lutheran and the University of Puget Sound.
“Kaylia has worked incredibly hard over the years. She was always a leader on the court and Pacific is lucky to have her join the team,” said Peninsula Girls Basketball Coach Hannah Lekson, who coached Heidelberg on the 2022-23 SSC championship team.
Heidelberg, a two-time first-team All-SSC selection, owns two Peninsula school records: three-pointers in a game (nine) and three-pointers in a season (68).
Cole Muilenburg, Football (Valparaiso)
Two-way, two-time All-SSC football player Cole Muilenburg is heading to Indiana to join the defensive line with the Valparaiso Beacons. “Valpo” is a Division I Football Championship Subdivision school in what is essentially a suburb of Chicago. The team went 3-8 during the 2023 season.
“Cole is huge,” said Beacons Coach Landon Fox about the 6 foot 5 Muilenburg. “He’s a prototypical defensive lineman in terms of length and size. He has a high ceiling and can affect the quarterback with his length.”
