The South Sound Conference announced the 2023-24 All-SSC girls and boys basketball honorees last month.
Peninsula girls senior guard Kaylia Heidelberg and junior Grace Richardson were named to the All-SSC first team, and senior Irene Segura made the honorable mention list. It was Heidelberg’s second consecutive appearance on the first team, while Richardson was All-SSC second team last season.
For the boys, Seahawks senior Cole Muilenburg and junior Isaac Schultz-Tait earned honorable mention honors.
The All-SSC postseason awards are voted on by conference coaches.
Heidelberg, Richardson and Segura were a big part of the Seahawks taking third place in the conference this season. The team ended the regular season with a 12-7 overall record and officially 9-5 in the conference. The Seahawks beat Gig Harbor in an extra tiebreaker game Feb. 3 that added a win to their overall total, but not to their conference record.
Heidelberg led the team with 19.2 points per game while averaging 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists. For someone who played most if not all 32 minutes of the game, perhaps her most impressive stat was a low 1.6 turnover average.
Richardson, who returns next year for the Seahawks, averaged 15.6 ppg and led Peninsula with 9.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 3.4 steals and 1.8 blocks.
Segura was counted on to come up with big rebounds at key times, and half of her 6.7 average was on the offensive side.
The boys team did not fare as well this season, finishing 4-16 overall, and 2-12 in the SSC. The boys did pick up a pair of wins at a tournament in San Diego in late December, but those wins (and one loss) did not count toward their record, according to the standings listed on the SSC website.
Schulz-Tait topped the team in scoring during league play with 13.6 ppg and averaged 5.1 rebounds and two steals. Muilenburg scored 9.7 ppg and led the team with 7.8 rebounds per game to wrap up his final season as a Seahawk.
