A team of four Gig Harbor Firefighters traveled to New York to receive a piece of the World Trade Center, and returned with it on Memorial Day. The piece of steel that weighs 986 pounds and is five feet long was awarded to Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One.
It will be incorporated into a memorial garden that will honor and remember the victims who were killed during the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001.
Rob McCoy, Josh Bissenas, Ryan Watson and Kent Cooper made their way back to Gig Harbor with the artifact in tow, and area fire districts escorted them. A Key Peninsula Fire District 16 engine met them in North Bend and was third in line during the escort to Gig Harbor. They were followed by a large group motorcyclists who represented branches of military, police and firefighters.
The procession made its way over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge at about 2:45 p.m. and a ceremony was held at Gig Harbor Fire District’s Station 50.
