Donald R. Henak

Sergeant First Class, retired, Donald R. Henak, 76, passed away July 5 after his battle with colon cancer.

Born and raised in Auburn, Don graduated from Auburn High School, joined the Air Force, and worked as an aircraft mechanic from 1966 to 1969. He served in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Bronze Star with the “V” device for valor, and many other medals.

Following his Vietnam years, Don earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated from the University of Washington with a double major in English communication and advertising.

By 1978, he had joined the Army Reserve and in 1983 went on active duty with the Army National Guard. He traveled to many states promoting the Guard as an NCO recruiter and advertising and sales rep. He received a Meritorious Service Medal and an Army Commendation Medal, and others awarded during his time in the Guard. Don retired from the military in August 2002 on a disability.

Don had a passion for playing billiards whenever he had a chance and taught his wife to play. Known as “Sarge” in the billiards community, Don made many new friends and even met some famous pool players along his journey. His favorite game was 9-ball.

Another favorite pastime was writing short stories with the local writers’ group. He published a few of them in community books produced by the class he attended.

Don is survived by his wife Jena Henak; brother Gary Henak; sons Jacob (Charity) and Andrew (Brianna); daughter Kari and stepdaughter Jessica (Ryan); six grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Lucille Henak.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. at the Key Peninsula Civic Center. Military honors will be held at the Vaughn Bay Cemetery before the celebration.
