Fred Ramsdell of Lakebay passed away Jan. 4. He was 87 years old.

Fred was born and raised on the family farm in Lakebay, the youngest of four children born to Henry Winslow and L. Delores Ramsdell. He attended grade school at the old schoolhouse in Home and Peninsula High School. He found work as a printer, a machinist, a mechanic, and a firefighter. He retired as acting Chief of the Key Peninsula Fire Department.

On Dec. 12, 1981, Fred married Mary Grubb. Combining their families gave them six children and, as time went on, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren.

After visiting the island of Hawaii with friends, Fred and Mary knew it was a special place. In 2006, they retired to the Big Island, where they built a house, grew a fabulous garden, and lived happily for 12 years before returning home to the Key Peninsula.

Fred spent a lot of time volunteering in the community. He was involved in many endeavors, but his favorite may have been his annual role as Santa Claus.

Fred built the Santa Sleigh that has been pulled by the fire department through Key Peninsula neighborhoods for years, many with Fred and Mary appearing as Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Fred made a lasting impression on his friends, family, and the entire community. He will be missed and always remembered.

Fred is survived by his wife Mary; daughters Denise Bowmer (Dave), Eileen Hoops (Allan); stepchildren Martin Nichols; Sherril Blake (Terry); Andrew Grubb (Teresa); and generations of grandchildren.

Fred was preceded in death by his brothers, Allan Ramsdell, Dale Ramsdell; sister Muriel Ramsdell; and stepson Kenneth Nichols.

A memorial is planned for mid-spring.
