Joseph came to the U.S. from Greece in 1968 to enroll as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago. His love of language – and languages – led to a PhD in linguistics, with a later focus on translation, machine translation software, and natural language processing systems.
Joseph lives on Herron Island and is a frequent contributor to the paper as a journalist, editor, On the Wing columnist, and historian. He has been researching and writing about the history of the Key Peninsula and the Pacific Northwest for several years. In 2023 he published “Change and Continuity: The Life and Times of the Purdy Bridge,” a history of the bridge that began as a three-part series in the KP News in 2022.
When he’s not writing, poring over dusty archives, or losing himself in one of the countless bilingual dictionaries in his office, Joseph bikes the hills of the KP and plies the waters of Case Inlet in his kayak. Assuming his dog Eva lets him out of her sight.
