Sara wrote her first story for the KP News in 2014. Prior to that her journalism experience was limited to serving as the editor of her high school newspaper.

She grew up mostly in Seattle, but came to know the KP as an 8-year old when her parents bought a piece of property in Lakebay where they camped and walked the beach whenever they could – and later built their dream house and became full-time residents. Sara and her husband Richard Gelinas (a KP News columnist) bought property nearby when their kids were young, built their dream house and moved here full time in 2012.

She worked for 30 years as a family doctor and medical educator. Getting to know her patients through their stories and learning to translate what specialists said into plain English has grounded her approach to writing.

When she’s not reporting or volunteering she fills her days with gardening, walking and occasionally biking or kayaking. And keeping up with her children and grandchildren who live in Austin and Los Angeles.

“Writing for the paper is such a gift. It has allowed me to delve into issues like logging and geoduck farms and to get to know some of the incredible people who live here. Winning the 2020 Feature Writer of the Year Washington Newspaper Publishers Association was the thrill of a lifetime.”
