Unfounded Rumors on Lakebay Marina Redevelopment

Posted

The Department of Natural Resources is continuing down the path towards permitting to remove the pier and pursuing a feasibility study/alternatives analysis to inform future planning and discussions ("State Officials Update KP Group on Lakebay Marina Restoration," August 2026).

DNR has not applied for permits to move the Egg Co-Op building or replace the pilings under it. There has been no change in strategy or new communication.

Last year we had a structural assessment completed by engineers which evaluated the building’s current structural integrity and assessed whether the building could withstand moving for future replacement. The assessment indicates that the building would survive moving it temporarily. However, we do not have the funding needed to replace the pilings or move the building. The structural assessment also assured us that the building is quite sound. The KP Citizens Advisory Committee requested and received a copy of the structural report in August.

We have heard concerns from the committee that DNR will let the building and pilings deteriorate to the point that the building collapses into the water. My hope is that the structural report has assured them that DNR is proactively monitoring the condition of the building. We have also been contacted by other organizations who seem to have heard the same rumor.

We hope this response will help quell the rumor that the building is about to collapse or that DNR is pursuing action to remove the building.
