The Key Peninsula Lions Club will present its 39th Key Peninsula Citizen of the Year Award, recognizing an outstanding community member, during its annual banquet March 14 at the KP Civic Center.
Anyone who lives or works on the KP who makes “an outstanding contribution to society is eligible (for the award),” said Hal Wolverton, KP Lions Club vice president. “It was designed for volunteers, but it’s not limited to volunteers because some people go way above and beyond.”
The Lions Club provides eyeglasses and hearing aids to KP residents, awards the KP Lions Memorial Scholarship to high school students, organizes highway cleanups, volunteers its labor and expertise to maintain and improve KP parks, distributes free dictionaries each year to every third-grader on the KP and to students at Key Peninsula Middle School, and makes grants to local nonprofits, all in keeping with the club motto: “We serve.”
“We will have an auctioneer this year for special items, along with simple raffle prizes,” Wolverton said. “With the proceeds from this event, the club is focusing on the Peninsula High School Hawks Scholarship Fund.”
The event will include a no-host bar and dinner prepared by the same professional chef as last year, Russell Goehle.
The keynote speaker will be Larry Seaquist, a representative for the 26th legislative district from 2007 to 2015.
