It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Michael Hoelscher, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who died Sept. 26. He was 77.

Born in 1949 to parents Louis and Lillian Hoelscher in North Bend, Oregon, Mike touched the lives of many with his warmth, humor, and unyielding love for others.

Mike’s academic journey took him from Wilson High School to Tacoma Community College, and ultimately to the University of Puget Sound, where he earned his master’s degree in business administration.

A proud veteran, Mike served honorably in the Navy, stationed in Vietnam and Alaska, before his discharge in 1975. His service to his country was a source of great pride and an integral part of his life story.

Professionally, Mike’s career began at Carl’s Drive-In in Tacoma, where he worked from the age of 17. His journey led him to the Heidelberg Brewery and later to Scott Wetzel Services as assistant vice president of data. He found his calling in the IT Dept. of Pierce College, where he dedicated over 30 years of his expertise and wisdom until retirement.

An avid sports fan, Mike held a deep passion for the Seattle Sounders and Seahawks, ensuring he never missed a game even during travels. He was excited about F1 racing as it gave him a connection with his grandson. His love of the outdoors brought him immense joy. Whether exploring the Puget Sound on his tide runner or cruising the San Juan Islands on a chartered trawler, Mike found solace in nature’s beauty.

Mike is survived by his wife Elaine, with whom he shared a remarkable partnership for 42 years. He leaves behind his stepson, Eric Williams; daughter-in-law Tam Marino (Scott Martin); beloved grandchildren Isabella and Gavin Williams; sister Susan Dixon (Ray Dixon); and his lifelong friend Rich Mayo. Each of them carries forward the legacy of love and kindness Mike so generously shared.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at St. Joseph Medical Center, especially Dr. Marina Jansen, Mike’s cardiologist, for exceptional care and support during his final days.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mike’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project.
