Key Peninsula resident Raymond Paul Schumsky died peacefully at home on the north end of the KP Oct. 9 after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 74.
Born to Raymond and Lucille Schumsky in Auburn, Paul was the second of three boys, all of whom died before him.
Paul was adventurous and athletic, a skilled meat cutter, a baby whisperer, and a talented musician who always had a song in his heart. He had a huge heart for people and all animals.
He attended Auburn High School, where he played football, wrestled, and ran track. His passion for music led him to sing in the church choir and play guitar in a garage band in high school. A steady influence throughout his life, he played music at home as an outlet that helped him chill out.
Many people knew Paul as “Ray” after he opened Ray’s Meat Market in Purdy in 2010, named in honor of his father, who practiced the same trade. He became a beloved community member who built Ray’s Meat Market from nothing. The business was his pride and joy.
He was a loving partner, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, son, and friend. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Paul is survived by Debbie Schumsky; sons Travis Prescott, Jesse Schumsky, and Derrick Schumsky; daughter Samantha Schumsky; stepdaughter Kelsie Campbell (Jerrell); grandchildren Maia, Lincoln, Ila, Serina, Logaen, Daryn, Lydia, and Brooklyn; and two great-grandchildren, Willow and Siah.
There will be a celebration of Paul’s life Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 410 H Street NE in Auburn.
