For the first time in six seasons, the Peninsula boys basketball team is back in postseason play.
The Seahawks finished the regular season 5-15 overall and 3-13 in the Puget Sound League and will compete in a loser-out game for the league’s final District 3 tournament berth Saturday, Feb. 7, at Foss High School. Peninsula, fourth in the Nisqually Division, faces Narrows Division No. 4 seed Silas at 3:45 p.m.
Peninsula qualified despite losing eight of its final 10 games. The Seahawks fell to Silas 82-59 in their Dec. 9 meeting. The last time Peninsula’s boys reached the postseason was Feb. 19, 2020.
Later that night, Bellarmine (19-2, 16-0 PSL) will represent the Narrows Division against River Ridge (12-8, 11-5) of the Nisqually Division for the Puget Sound League championship.
The Peninsula girls, longtime postseason regulars, find themselves in a similar position to the Seahawks boys this year. The girls (9-11, 7-9 PSL) face Lincoln (7-10, 7-9) in another loser-out District 3 qualifier at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Foss.
Both teams finished fourth in their divisions. Peninsula beat Lincoln 48-44 on Dec. 5 and has won three of its past four games entering the matchup.
Gig Harbor (17-3, 14-2) meets perennial power North Thurston (16-5, 14-2) later Saturday for the PSL girls championship.
