Construction crews and temporary stop lights have cleared out along State Route 302 in the Victor area after the Washington State Department of Transportation completed a months-long fish barrier removal project on Victor Creek.

Additional planting is planned for the spring. WSDOT will continue monitoring the site over the next three years to ensure vegetation is established and the restoration work is successful.

WSDOT officials said the Victor Creek project is separate from the SR 302 Victor Area Corridor Study. That study evaluated potential improvements to address roadway sloughing and landslides along a stretch of SR 302 that has experienced periodic closures. The fish barrier removal project originated from a statewide barrier inventory first compiled in 2013 and is part of WSDOT’s ongoing compliance with a U.S. District Court injunction requiring the removal of fish passage barriers affecting salmon and steelhead.

Plans are also moving forward for a roundabout at the intersection of SR 302 and 118th Street. WSDOT periodically reviews rural, stop-controlled intersections on state highways to identify opportunities for reducing collisions. A 2021 safety analysis found the SR 302 - 118th Street intersection would benefit from a roundabout.

A pre-design study completed in 2023 included a virtual stakeholder meeting and an online open house. The project is currently in the design phase. Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2027, though the timeline could change. The current cost estimate is $3.5 million and may be adjusted as design work is finalized.

The original roundabout concept realigned the 118th Avenue intersection with SR 302, according to WSDOT. "Feedback received during the online open house identified proposed development plans on the southeast corner of the intersection. The new conceptual roundabout does not realign 118th Avenue. The roundabout's center and raised island curbing (are) drivable for larger vehicles negotiating the roundabout," according to the website.

The February Key Peninsula Council meeting featuring updates on State Route 302 is scheduled for Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Key Center Fire Station, with a virtual attendance option available. A WSDOT representative is scheduled to give an overview of ongoing and planned projects and answer questions from the public.
